We work hard to ensure a positive experience for both mentors and protégés. Some examples of resources we offer include:
- Monthly calls from program staff to mentor-protege pairs to see how things are going.
- Free tickets to enrichment events for pairs.
- Monthly newsletter with free activities for pairs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and program updates.
- Competitive scholarships to seniors presented at the annual banquet in May.

What is Mentors, Inc.? Mentors, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that pairs high school students in the District of Columbia Pubic School (DCPS) system (protégés) with trained adult volunteers (mentors).
What is the Mission of Mentors, Inc.? To promote the personal, academic, and career development of young adults enrolled in the District of Columbia’s public high schools, through structured and enriched mentoring relationships with caring adult volunteers.
How are the mentors selected? Mentors, Inc. recruits mentors from businesses, community organizations, local and federal government agencies, civic associations, and other interested groups.
Are there any requirements to be a mentor? Mentors must:
- Be 21 years of age
- Have earned a high school diploma
- Spend at least five hours a month with their protégé and contact that student each week by phone or email
How do I become a mentor?Each prospective volunteer must: - Fill out an application
- Pass a criminal background check and submit a $40 processing fee
- Provide two character references
- Provide a photo copy of a photo ID and an auto insurance card
- Participate in four hours of training and orientation
How are the students selected?Mentors, Inc. works with DC Public High Schools and Charter Schools to identify students who are interested in having a mentor. Students must attend an orientation session with their parent or guardian. Does Mentors, Inc. offer any other services besides mentoring?Yes, in addition to recruiting, training and matching mentors with students, Mentors Inc. also provides: - Career and job readiness training workshops
- College tours and college prep workshops
- Community Service opportunities
- Referrals to Academic tutoring, SAT prep classes and pro bono professional services
